RUBEN VICTORIANO

RUVIK - THE ANTAGONIST

Ruvik's projection inside the STEM

Ruben Victoriano(aka)Ruvik, as many do not know about him, is portrayed as the antagonist, in the game called THE EVIL WITHIN.  Its a wonderful game and I'd surely suggest you guys to give it a go.

But the main reason for this blog is not about reviewing the game, instead its about the main villain,  Ruvik. After going through the whole game I felt like I can speak about something on this matter.

Ruben Victoriano, is introduced as a heir of the very rich Victoriano family, but right from his childhood, his parents were disappointed with him. He was a mentally unstable kid, or he is "portrayed" as being such. He was not a very friendly kid, mainly because he was shunned away by others due to his appearance and his very eccentric and aberrant mannerisms. The only other soul whom he loved and got love from, was his sister named, Laura, who gets killed by a fire accident caused by people who wanted revenge on his parents. As a result, right from his childhood, he develops hatred towards people.

He was a genius, and right from very young age he did his own research in the anatomical study of Human Brain. He figures out which part of the brain corresponds to the most hidden emotions like rage, hate, ecstasy, hope, domination etc.

He starts his own research, with the main intention of creating his own world, within his mind, so that he can revive his sister, through his memories and live with her, getting the materials from other people's minds, through electrochemical and psychological linking. He gets all the materials through a doctor, named Dr. Marcelo Jimenez, who works in a hospital called the BEACON MENTAL HOSPITAL. Dr. Jimenez assists Ruvik, in building a machine called STEM, which, basically has one host brain, to which many other people's brain can be connected. The problem arises when Dr. Jimenez, betrays Ruvik and takes all the credit for the construction of the STEM. But that's not the main problem.

As we play through the game as Sebastian Castellanos, we come to know that apart from being betrayed by Jimenez, Ruvik's own brain, is used as the host brain for the STEM. So he gets brutally killed by Jimenez's men and his brain is kept alive, to be used as the host. Dr. Jimenez starts the machine and connects many patients to the STEM for a test run.

Since, its Ruvik's brain, that is being used as the host, his consciousness begins to cause havoc and nightmarish consequences, inside the world, which is being created from various memories in the brains of people, who get connected to the STEM. He summons a lot of nightmarish monsters from his subconscious and tries to kill anyone entering his brain. He also succeeds in killing Dr. Jimenez, when he himself connects his mind to the STEM.

So, after completing the whole game, I found myself asking questions. Isn't Dr. Jimenez, the antagonist? He uses Ruvik as a tool for constructing the "wonder" machine.

Ruvik, loses his beloved sister, loses his faith in humanity, loses credit for his research, yet, he just wants to be left in solitude, inside his own mind, alone with the memories of his sister. As the game progressed, I started feeling sorry for Ruvik, even though we'll be chased by the monsters he created, throughout the game. Moreover, I saw the game as an exaggerated and fictionized, yet a complete reflection of today's society too.

All of us are monsters in the deep. All of us witness the monsters in others too. People are waiting to snatch the opportunities of others and use it selfishly. People are continuously in search for geniuses, so that they can remain idle forever. People are always ready to get the credits for someone else's hard work. We see all these monstrosities everyday. Yet, we decide to be humans, ultimately.

I can't say for sure, how long we'll be holding on to this disguise, and I can't even imagine the consequences, when we take off the masks. As Albert Einstein says,“I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.”

ANYWAYS, I KNOW THIS IS A BIG POST, BUT ITS MY OPINION THAT'S VOICED OUT HERE. JUST GOT A THOUGHT, THAT I CAN MAKE SURE, THAT MY MASK IS FIXED TIGHTLY AND I AM STILL A HUMAN, VOICING OUT MY SYMPATHY FOR A VIRTUAL CHARACTER, WHO IS BLAMED AND PORTRAYED AS THE ANTAGONIST.

THANKS FOR GOING THROUGH THIS POST PATIENTLY
